For years, Kristen and I have helped people tell their stories to help make change, whether it was for state or federal legislation, rule-making making or associations or groups trying to amplify their issue.
Last year, we were recruited to join the U.S. Chamber’s Small Business Council. After years of helping others use their voices for advocacy, it’s been a nice change to do the advocating ourselves.
One of the priorities of the SBC is the federal tax bill and our first task on the SBC was the tax fly-in. When Kristen and I started K2, President Trump’s initial tax reform bill was making its way through Congress. As a result, we enjoyed a growth trajectory that let us put more money back into the business and provide more benefits to our team.
Within a couple of years, we started offering healthcare stipends, 401k matching, profit sharing, and other things our team needed.
Our team continues to grow because we’ve been expanding our services to our clients. We started with traditional public affairs and public relations, but we quickly realized our clients needed a more full-service approach that includes event management, association management, and fundraising. We also learned that in the fast-paced media environment, leaders across the country need to pay attention to their brand management in a new way.
All of these things have been great for our clients, and we want to keep growing to be able to provide these services. That’s why it’s important Congress renews the tax bill. For small businesses like ours, the 20% pass-through deduction is our growth. Without it, we will have to rethink our next steps.
Many of you are small businesses or entities that depend on the reforms in the tax bill. Help us make sure tax reform happens. Send your story to the U.S. Chamber.
Here are some of the important provisions in the tax bill. Read more here.
- The TCJA’s pro-growth reforms should be made permanent.
- The 20% deduction for pass-through business income provides them with capital for reinvestment in operations and workforce
- The deduction for research (R&D) expenses must be reinstated because it’s an investment in technology and an investment in people.
Don’t assume others will advocate for you; get out there and use your voice!
